Streak-free windows: what really matters?

The right timing, very little detergent and the right order – that’s how panes get clear.

Streaks on windows rarely come from too little effort. Usually it’s the order of steps, too much detergent or bad timing. A few basic rules are enough for clear panes – no special tricks needed.

The right timing

Avoid cleaning windows in direct sunlight. The warmth dries the water before you can squeegee it off – and leaves streaks behind. An overcast day or a time when the window is in the shade is ideal.

What you need

  • Two soft microfibre cloths – one for washing, one for polishing
  • A squeegee with a clean, undamaged rubber blade
  • Lukewarm water with a few drops of mild washing-up liquid
  • A bucket and a dry cloth for frames and windowsill

Step by step

  1. Clean the frames and seals first so no dirt runs onto the clean glass later.
  2. Wash the pane thoroughly with the damp cloth, from top to bottom.
  3. Squeegee in overlapping strokes and wipe the rubber blade after each stroke.
  4. Polish the edges and corners with the dry microfibre cloth.
  5. Finally, wipe the windowsill.

Common mistakes

  • Too much detergent – it leaves a film on the glass
  • Reusing dirty water or a soiled cloth
  • Scouring agents, abrasive sponges or blades on delicate glass
  • Paper towels that leave lint

Special glass and frames

Coated glass, windows with glazing bars, and wooden or plastic frames have their own requirements. Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions and test new products on an inconspicuous spot first. Acidic products such as vinegar or lemon juice aren’t suitable for every surface – they can permanently damage windowsills made of marble or other calcareous natural stone.

Safety first: with high or hard-to-reach windows, never lean far out and don’t stand on unstable furniture.
