Deep cleaning or maintenance cleaning: what’s the difference?
Two terms that are often confused – and when each type of cleaning is the right one.

Both terms appear in almost every cleaning offer, yet they’re often mixed up. In fact, they differ clearly in goal, effort and frequency.
Maintenance cleaning: the regular standard
Maintenance cleaning (Unterhaltsreinigung) keeps an already well-kept condition. It takes place at fixed intervals – weekly, for example – and covers recurring tasks: dusting, cleaning floors, caring for kitchen and bathroom, taking out the rubbish.
Deep cleaning: thorough from the ground up
Deep cleaning (Grundreinigung) goes further. It removes stubborn dirt that regular cleaning doesn’t reach:
- Limescale and grease build-up in bathroom and kitchen
- Dirt in grout, corners and on skirting boards
- Marks on doors, frames, radiators and light switches
- Cupboards and appliances on the inside, if agreed

When each makes sense
- Deep cleaning: when moving in or out, after a renovation, after a long time without cleaning or as the start of regular care.
- Maintenance cleaning: when your apartment or office should stay well kept over time.
The combination works best
A one-off deep clean is often the ideal start. After that, regular maintenance cleaning is enough to keep things in shape – with much less effort per visit. A repeat deep clean once or twice a year can be a useful addition.
Before any deep clean, it’s worth clarifying which areas and materials need special care.
